I discovered Unlighted on Kickstarter a few months ago and backed it at the highest tier as no one had backed it and I wanted some bragging rights. See my full playthrough below from the release, including the rewards! Note: it will include spoilers, but the text here will remain spoiler-free.
The Unlighted developers are from Spain and this is their first fully released video game. These indie developers poured their heart and soul into this game and it’s an absolute blast.
Unlighted is a first-person puzzle story game with some interesting twists. The NPC, Bill, reminded me of Portal from his dialogue with my character, Test Subject #6. At the same time, it has some almost haunting moments as you explore Umbral Alchemy’s testing facilities and uncover some harrowing truths about those who came before you.
The puzzles are pretty straightforward with me getting stuck only a handful of times. I eventually figured everything out, even with some of the clues being right in front of my face! It was nice to complete objectives and progress through the story.
My biggest complaint was the use of AI for the voice acting of the two characters in the game. I’m vehemently against AI in creation of art for both its theft from artists and it’s drain on our planet. When I mentioned this to the developers, they agreed and noted they were attempting to secure funding for voice actors. Once obtained, they will be updating the game to remove AI.
The only other real complaint I had with the game was the story references your character having a daughter pretty early on. However, there’s no draw or reason as to why this is important. I wish they had added some references to her, such as your character mentioning her, looking at her picture, having a memento of hers, or something along those lines. This overall seemed like a preference rather than actual negative of the game, hence I mention it last.
Overall, I highly recommend the game! I lucked out with my Kickstarter gamble and had a blast playing and enjoying the rewards! It’s nice to know that my cat, Tina, and my family are forever immortalized in a video game ♥
